Ode to M

Yesterday was Father's Day. In the morning I asked S & N what they love most about their dad and this is what they said:
  • he's a good man*, a very sweet one too
  • he loves us very much
  • he's really good at running and skipping rope
  • he often buys us small presents
  • he always plays tennis with me (S) and I like to watch (N)
  • he's funny, mostly
  • he's very kind to mum
  • he takes good care of us
  • he sometimes brings mum flowers
  • he cooks nice stuff
  • he's good at making stuff out of Lego
  • he gives fantastic hugs and kisses
  • he built a remote-control car without an instruction book, and that's very very clever

What could I possibly add to that?

(* Don't you love it when kids say something that sounds totally archaic?)


For dessert I made a little treat I've decided to call Berry Flaps. They were absolutely delicious. Here is the recipe (quick and easy!):

Berry Flaps

A tub of blueberries, rinsed
A handful of strawberries, rinsed, hulled and cut into halves
1 tablespoon of raw cane sugar (really no more is needed)
4-6 squares of  ready-made puff pastry
1 egg, beaten

  • preheat the oven 220 degrees Celsius (or according to instructions on pastry packet)
  • lay the squares of puff pastry on an oven tray lined with baking paper
  • in a bowl, stir together the berries and sugar
  • now place a small amount of the berry filling onto the middle of the squares and fold them into triangles. Press the edges gently with a fork to seal. This is very important - if the Flap isn't sealed properly, the filling will spill out. You probably won't need all of the mixture, but that shouldn't be a problem; there's bound to be someone there willing to polish those berries off in no time
  • brush the Flaps with the beaten egg
  • bake for 20 minutes until lovely and golden   




Foolishly I made five and there was a quarrel about who would get to eat the one left over. M won of course, but he was kind enough to share, bless him.

I've just been looking at a recipe for something made out of Lucky Charms (a hideous American breakfast cereal with technicoloured marshmallows in it), Cool Whip, instant pudding, white chocolate and Baileys would you believe? It was a lurid shade of green and so was I after reading the recipe. Thank goodness for simple, sensible and tasty puddings like your Berry Flaps.

  2. Gosh we had the same desert on Sunday night with mulberries. Yummo! Love that they said Dad is good at skipping rope haha :)
